The Citrus Club – La Quinta

The Citrus Club Golf Course

The charming art colony of La Quinta is home to some of the finest golf clubs and exquisitely designed courses in all of California: in fact in the nation. One of the most famous is the Citrus Club. Construction commenced in 1988 and completed in 1994 but during this time the club operated in a temporary location behind the ninth green. With an eye toward ecology and maintaining the natural beauty of this exquisite desert Mecca, designer Pete Dye made sure to incorporate the breathtaking views of the Santa Rosa Mountains and preserve the ancient trees that dotted the landscape.

Back in 1926 when Walter H. Morgan opened the La Quinta Hotel, it would have been hard to imagine more than half a century down the line, just how popular it would all become. The original 20 room property that comprised the hotel immediately became the favorite hideaway for the elite of Hollywood during that era. The La Quinta Resort is still considered one of the most beautiful and historical of all Coachella Valley resorts. It was not unusual to see stars such as Clark Gable, Katherine Hepburn, Greta Garbo, Bette Davis and Errol Flynn strolling across the perfectly manicured grounds.

The Citrus Club became the first purely private golf course with home sites on both sides of the fairway and its spectacular location just off the La Quinta Resort property. In 1995, the Members Only Private Clubhouse opened creating a tradition of luxury golf that is still with few equals. The offerings of championship golf, tennis, spa and private membership have brought it international acclaim by even the most discerning aficionados.

The Audubon Society has offered its own accolades. The Citrus Club is committed to a proactive pursuit of the best in environmental stewardship for today and for the future. With attention to water conservation, environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management and chemical use reduction the Citrus Club has made a powerful statement to the Coachella Valley and set an example for others to follow.
The Dunes Course, at the foot of the Santa Rosa Mountains and designed by Pete dye favors accuracy from the tee and showcases the natural beauty of the Mojave Desert. The Mountain Course expertly and beautifully carved from the Santa Rosa Mountains is one of Pete Dye’s most stunning creations with its signature 16th hole. The Citrus Course, with its white skirted citrus trees lining the fairways, water hazards and sand bunkers is a true Pete Dye masterpiece. With seven sets of tees any golfer skill level can play the course.

Golf does not get any better than the Citrus Club and the locals know it. One of the best places to play in the Valley, it is the stuff of legends.
